It's difficult to say, "I'm unhappy at work." After a while you start
to believe that you are trapped and cannot do anything about your
situation. The negative feelings start and over time they become
stronger. Negative feelings do damage. They can affect every area
of your life, including your relationships, motivation, physical,
and mental health.
So if being unhappy at work does so much damage, then why do we stay
in jobs that make us unhappy longer than we want to?
Mostly, because we are afraid. We worry that the grass is not greener
on the other side. We wonder if we will be able to pay our bills.
We worry that we may make another mistake. We know we are unhappy,
but the known is better than the unknown. Actually more times than not,
we go along and hope that things will get better on their own. Not
only do we suffer emotionally, but our spirits and self-esteem
diminish while we are waiting.
Is being happy in a job really that important? Shouldn't we just be
grateful for the job we have versus wishing for a dream job we'll
never get? It depends on the quality of life you want for yourself.
