Description:
POSITION PURPOSE Under general supervision, provides support and clinical data for departmental research with the goal of eventually understanding the epidemiology and pathophysiology of infectious diseases. Works on avian influenza and category A bioterrorism agents along with the majority of microbial causes of respiratory trach disease. ESSENTIAL DUTIES 1. Carries out experimental designs for sponsored research projects, and performs routine experiments including biological applications of molecular amplification technology, PCR, handling RNA/DNA and clinical samples. 2. Run CAP/CLIA certified clinical assays and report data to director in timely manner. 3. Records and compiles accurate records and communicates summaries of experimental results. 4. Helps evaluate, interpret and assess experimental data and quality control of assays. 5. Participates in meetings with principal investigator and research staff and evaluates/interprets the validity of data, as needed. 6. Carries out assigned duties for ordering and maintaining supply of inventories. 7. Operates, calibrates and performs routine maintenance on specialized equipment used in research. 8. Oversees daily lab operation in the absence of the supervisor or Principle Investigator. MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis Education: Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field Experience: 1 year experience required. Certifications/Licenses: None KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES Understand scientific approach and methodologies and proficiency in standard molecular methods including handling RNA/DNA and clinical samples. Hands on experience in PCR, including operation and maintenance of instruments and performance of specialized molecular amplification and biological assays strongly preferred. Understanding of general and specific laboratory procedures including molecular amplification technology and infectious diseases. Ability to use independent judgment. Ability to follow research methodology and protocol. Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures. Strong critical thinking, problem solving and attentiveness to detail required.
