PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Family Advocate Program (FAP) Victim Advocates provide victims of spouse abuse with information regarding safe and confidential ways to seek assistance, their rights as Navy spouses, military and civilian orders for protection, and available civilian and military resources. Crisis intervention, safety assessment and planning. Arrange transportation to shelters, medical, legal, and support group appointments. Accompany victims to interviews with investigative agencies and appearances in court. Consult with the FAP Case Manager regarding development of an appropriate plan of assistance/intervention which provides for the safety of the victim. Serve as a consultant to the Case Review Committee (CRC), when asked. Assist FAP Case Managers in making referrals to other helping agencies, when asked.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or other social service field with one year experience with domestic violence victims and crisis intervention OR
Four years of experience working with domestic violence victims
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of family violence dynamics, local community resources, and federal and state laws pertaining to domestic violence, sexual assault and family law. Knowledge of the military, Department of Defense (DOD) and Family Advocacy Program (FAP).
Ability to understand, be sensitive to, and have empathy for victims. Ability to develop trusting empowering relationships and to work effectively with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Ability to intervene in crisis situations, using sound professional judgement, ethical practice, and common sense.
Ability to work cooperatively with military and civilian medical, social service, law enforcement, and legal personnel on behalf of victims.
Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software - Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook Express, and Explorer. Knowledge of the Fleet and Family Support Management Information System (FFSMIS). Skilled in the use of office software application to prepare management reports and use software to develop information.
Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and military regulations pertaining to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
All positions requiring access to U.S. Government facilities require U.S. Citizenship.
