Description:
POSITION PURPOSE
A programmer analyst position is now open within the Human and Molecular Genetics Center (HMGC) at the Medical College of Wisconsin (http://www.mcw.edu/HMGC.htm). HMGC scientists work at the interface of genomics, bioinformatics, and clinical research using genomic approaches to understand disease, and translating this information from the laboratory bench to patients in our affiliated hospitals. The centers close affiliation with clinicians and researchers at nationally acclaimed medical centers provides our researchers with a unique opportunity to impact patient care. This challenging position will involve the design and implementation of software for data acquisition, integration, mining and visualization as part of a team of clinical informaticists, computer scientists and bioinformaticians working on clinical research and studies lead by internal researchers or collaborators in our affiliated hospitals. The programmer analyst is expected to make a significant impact within this project and will have the opportunity to participate in projects integrating clinical data with genomic datasets.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Work with biologists, informaticists, and clinicians to gather user requirements and develop use cases pertaining to ongoing and new clinical projects.
2. Design, code, test, debug, modify, and document applications for use in these projects.
3. Carry out development and/or refinement of data analysis and integration methodology and pipelines.
4. Make recommendations for new functionality based on analysis of required functionality.
5. Assist, as required, in the analysis of clinical and associated data.
6. Direct project teams on a project-by-project basis.
7. Perform related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related discipline.
Experience: 5 years of Java experience managing application design, software development, maintenance and delivery with at least 3 years experience with application servers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
The successful candidate will have experience in software development with demonstrated proficiency with current, relevant programming languages. A minimum of 3 years technical work experience in a team environment as a programmer is required, as is a strong background in Web architecture, Web design, development tools, and languages, e.g. JSP, Servlets, J2EE, Spring, Groovy, JavaScript, XML, HTML, CSS, Perl is required. The successful candidate will have excellent relational database skills (SQL, Oracle, MySQL), and experience working in a UNIX environment. Experience designing N-tiered applications, with multi-tier architecture and production internet architectures is also required.
Education or experience in biology is a definite bonus. Experience in integration, management, and analysis of biological or clinical datasets is a definite advantage, as is experience working on clinical applications for the heathcare industry or experience working in a HIPPA compliant environment. Candidates with a more limited biological background, but with an active interesting in expanding their expertise in this area are also encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate should be able to design, develop, test and run analysis tools under the direction of senior management and project leads.
The successful candidate requires excellent oral and written communication skills; strong critical thinking, problem solving and attentiveness to detail are required.
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, highly motivated, and have strong communication skills. They should be able to assist in the direction of other, less experienced project team members. The individual in this position is part of a group working on the development and use of clinical, genomic, and genetic applications, processes and pipelines and so should be able to work well in a team environment with other with diverse scientific backgrounds.
