JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of certified personnel, provides custom designed, fabricated and fitted external orthoses/prostheses patients, based on clinical assessment and physician prescription, for the purpose of restoring function or improving cosmesis. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in orthotics and/or prosthetics, or completion of a Bachelor's Degree in a related field and completion of a certificate program in orthotics and/or prosthetics. Must have successfully completed a National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) accredited residency. Must maintain Board Eligible status with the American Board for Certification in Orthotics & Prosthetics to retain job classification (failure of certification test beyond ABC limits for Board Eligible status, or failure to achieve certification in three years, will result in termination). Typical physical demands include walking and standing for long periods of time. Manual dexterity to perform patient evaluations, cast impression, plaster mold modifications, and device adjustments. Visual acuity such as to observe gait, movement, or assess skin integrity. Clear speech to perform patient education. Hearing to understand patient's description of symptoms. Cognitive and analytical skills to make appropriate clinical judgments regarding patient care. Communication and empathy skills to interact with patients who may have severe disability.
