AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL OPERATIONS APPRENTICEAs an air traffic controller, you will play a direct role in the achievement of the Air Force flying mission by providing vital services to air carriers and general aviation. Air traffic controllers perform varied and complex duties in control towers and radar facilities. Teamwork between crews in control towers and radar facilities is of great importance.Controllers are tasked with providing for the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of aircraft on the airport, as well as in the air. This is achieved through the use of two-way radio communications, radar systems with associated computer equipment, landline communications systems and visual light-gun signals. Air traffic controllers provide emergency assistance to aircraft and are responsible for notifying and coordinating with emergency personnel.Controllers participate, along with air weather service personnel, in a cooperative weather watch by making limited weather observations and by relaying pilot-reported weather conditions. During periods of bad weather, when visibility is limited and cloud cover hampers operations, air traffic controllers guide aircraft to the runway through the use of radar, instrument landing systems and various types of airfield lighting.Air Force air traffic controllers provide air traffic control service to commercial, private and military aircraft and are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to perform this function. Air Force controllers often work very closely, many times in the same facility, with their civilian counterparts or host nation civil aviation authorities.
