We have an immediate opening for a Corporate Safety Manager working from our Folsom, CA headquarters.
The Safety Manager is responsible for creating and maintaining a culture committed to an illness and injury free-workplace and facilitates the implementation of safety policy throughout the Company. The Safety Manager also monitors compliance with all state and federal DOT and OSHA regulations and assists with the implementation of necessary revisions or modifications to stay in compliance with such regulations. The position develops and drives Company-wide programs and initiatives designed to prevent accidents and injuries in the work place. This role is viewed as a strategic, consulting partner to field management and spends considerable time in the field working with region and district level management.
Position Responsibilities:
Develops, implements and sustains a behavioral corporate safety based program
Oversees and enforces compliance with all OSHA and EPA regulations pertaining to company operations while maintain awareness of OSHA and EPA amendments and making recommendations for their implementation
Reviews internal safety policies and practices and ensures they are current and appropriate
Conducts hazard and risk assessments and develops new or, where necessary, makes recommendations to amend safety policies and procedures
Creates a work environment which reflects a commitment to protecting the heath and safety of employees
Leads a three-person regional safety team
Orients and integrates new acquisitions regarding safety culture, policies and procedures
Develops or procures safety training programs and aids
Stays current with DOT and OSHA regulations as well as other safety related practices affecting the Company and keeps the Company’s health and safety policy manual current and up to date
Responds to DOT and OSHA complaints and notices of violation on behalf of the Company and argues the defense for the Company and the district involved
Coordinates the DOT vehicle registration numbering system for the Company
Maintains and directs the Company’s national driver qualification file (DQF) vendor program
Maintains and directs the Company’s national drug and alcohol testing and monitoring vendor program
Coaches district managers on safety policy and accident/injury prevention
Conducts accident/injury investigations in concert with the Claims Manager-Corporate, as required
Initiates safety projects and initiatives that provide district management with the tools and training to conduct their activities in a safe manner
Develops and maintain the Company’s safety video library and use of these videos in the field
Provides a various safety data/reports as required
Serves on the Safety Committee of the NSWMA
Maintains membership and attends industry and professional conferences/seminars to stay informed of safety products and safety related issues affecting the company
Manages cross-functional projects, as required
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required
10+ years experience in transportation related safety, with recent field experience.
Experience in the waste industry desired
Specific Knowledge and Skills:
Thorough knowledge of DOT and OSHA regulations.
Ability to maintain performance levels in a busy, fast-paced and constantly changing work environment.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills and the ability to present ideas and recommendations in a clear and concise format to small and large groups of employees including field management as well as upper management.
Must have the ability and temperament to remain calm and professional in the face of adversity and tense situations.
Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, and Outlook.
Job incumbents must be able to:
Sit or stand for long periods of time, up to 8 hours per day.
View computer screen for extended periods of time.
Use keyboard a majority of the day.
Use of telephone, telephone headset and ability to listen and respond throughout the day.
Occasionally bend/stoop to lift boxes or supplies of up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment:
Travels by automobile and airplane to various company locations about 75% of time including overnight visits.
When not traveling, most work is done in a typical office environment.
