Smartsource is looking for a Java Solutions Architect.

Contract Duration: 12 months

General Purpose of Position:
Serves as the highest level technical expert in solution architecture for software development / infrastructure teams at the program level. Has extensive experience delivering IT solutions. Develops and drives short and long term architecture strategy for the overall IT project portfolio for key business segments. Develops technical strategy for the program. Acts as key technical contact point for all architecture decisions within a given program and ensures the appropriate level of architecture reviews are conducted.

Advises teams of companies standard requirements, security standards, methodology and processes. Acts as SME in the plan and design of new solutions. Uses a broad and deep understanding of technical concepts in multiple specialized fields to develop solutions to problems and critical design issues. Work assignments are typically focused on critical projects for the organization. Works independently and will likely supervise the work of others.. Will manage relationships with suppliers/vendors.

Ensuring key initiatives for Business Unit align with the core goals and strategic direction of client.
• Develop and drive the short and long term architecture strategy for key business segments. Focus is beyond specific projects addressing cross project needs and future program direction.
• Provide cost effective solutions that enable the business. Maximize flexibility and the ability to integrate with other systems.
• Supports the development of architecture principles, styles, patterns and standards for systems across the Business Unit, translating corporate strategy into technical strategy
• Organize peer review, gain consensus, and socialize proposed solution with all stakeholders.
• Communicate and validate program architecture with Lead Architect, program / project manager, executive level stakeholders and enterprise architects
• Review legacy architecture, identify components strategically aligned for re-architecture, monitor technology usage for end of life cycle
• Driving the Common Code base architecture approach/vision across the company.
• Review of solutions to ensure common services and patterns are created or leveraged whenever possible.
• Aid in requirements gathering and coordinate efforts to build common services across projects. Socialize need for single common services across projects.

Provide architecture oversight and support
• Advise teams of the companies standard requirements, security standards, and processes.
• Act as SME for existing architecture and provide analysis on components that should be replaced, made more flexible, configurable, scalable, or redundant.
• Review architecture and infrastructure design documents, Deployment Plans, Test Strategies, and audits/metrics where applicable.


Requires Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of (include required education, years of experience, and any required professional certifications):

• Broad architecture background, development experience, solid understanding of patterns and frameworks.
• Expert knowledge of the software development process and how it fits within the IT architecture and infrastructure. Practical experience leveraging agile and iterative life-cycle methods for solutions development.
• Thorough knowledge of Structured Methodology Architecture and Design Process. Practical experience in developing systems using the (Rational) Unified Process including the use of UML.
• Knowledge in core technologies, including enterprise platforms, open standards, security frameworks, database, business intelligence, and integration technologies.
• Expert knowledge and understanding of industry trends and new technologies and ability to apply trends to architectural needs
• Ability to analyze, recognize and anticipate problems (technical, operational, process, organizational) and to identify the best solution in a timely manner.
• Ability to review and analyze solutions and apply the company and industry best practices. Assessing architectural choices and the risks or trade-offs associated with those choices.
• Relevant domain background for Financial Services Systems (e.g. Originations, Servicing, Risk Management, Securitization, )
• Builds relationships and fosters teamwork: Ability to work with diverse groups including solution providers, hosting providers and business analysts in a constructive and collaborative manner.
• Communicates effectively. Conveys information and ideas both orally and in writing and listens and responds appropriately to others.
• 7-10 yrs generalist experience, including knowledge of project management techniques and solid understanding of day to day development activities. Must be strong technologists, capable of providing technical expertise to projects.
• Bachelor of Science degree in IS/ IT required or equivalent.
• FFIEC or banking regulation experience is a significant plus

The client has multiple projects across various domains Treasury, Cash Management, Accounting, Trading, Capital Management and Balance Sheet Management space that require a Solution Architect to work with their business, IT, and vendor stakeholders to define and build out solutions for.


The stakeholders will include a client technical lead, domain leads (Technical - Infrastructure, QA/Testing, Governance, Data Warehouse / Business – NAO, IO, Insurance, Mortgage, Commercial Finance, Auto Finance) and 3rd party or insource development team architects, project managers, business analysts etc. A majority of the projects are addressing the clients need to consolidate disparate systems into one common platform via a COTS solution.


The Solution Architect will facilitate white board sessions to dive in and ask questions and facilitate discussions around identifying systems integration points, technical gaps, data flows and enterprise implications (infrastructure hardware capacity, traffic volumes, footprint of user base etc.) in order to assist in the selection of commercially available applications or tools to apply to each business domain or process. Ultimate responsibility will be to determine what is currently being done, what needs to get fixed and align an integrated solution between multiple associated systems/processes where feasible. Some of the tools common to this space are SunGard, QRM (Quantitative Risk Management), Sierra, Black Rock, Fidelity, SAP Financials etc.


The keys to success will be the ability to balance between the high level solution development and the end delivery of that solution. Need to be able to roll up the sleeves and brain storm from an enterprise point of view on the front end of each project and trace the solution - technically – through delivery. Qualified candidates will have a solid 5-7 years of experience as a Solution Architect background preferably in a Financial Services arena, have been responsible for interfacing multiple source systems into one common platform and managed to a formal methodology (SDP 21 experience a plus). Excellent communication skills are essential.


Former client experience as a Solution or Oversight Architect would also be considered here, if they have extensive knowledge of the global/enterprise technical landscape. SAP is a focus area - specifically relating to Balance Sheet Management. Data Modeling/Data Warehouse experience is also desired.


The duration of this assignment will be anywhere from 6-12 months. These are immediate needs.
