Description:
JOB SUMMARY
 
Performs computerized scheduling for surgical procedures in both the Main Operating Rooms and the Medical Mall Operating Rooms.
 
JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Accurately schedules surgical procedures using open and block time in the Main OR and Medical Mall OR; reserves specified equipment and personnel as indicated or requested using the suspension and credential/privilege lists.
Utilizes Med Sched to schedule other non-surgical procedures.
Schedules and reserves patient bed accommodation at time of surgery including outpatient, AM Admit, extended stay, inpatient, etc.
Schedules PAC (Pre Anesthesia Clinic) appointments.
Assists OR management with the moving of cases for better utilization of OR time.
Notifies the appropriate physician and/or office staff of changes in the surgery schedule. Requests as necessary that physicians change start times and/or locations to Main OR or Medical Mall.
Notifies appropriate departments and personnel of changes in the surgery schedule.
Revises and distributes the final copy of the surgery schedule by 1600 hours after conferring with department management regarding maximum utilization of staff, space, and equipment to fulfill scheduling needs.
At the time of surgery scheduling, coordinates outpatient scheduling procedures that may be needed.
Coordinates interpreter services with Case Management for patients as needed.
Coordinates and prepares the Cosmetic Surgery Remittance Form for scheduled cosmetic surgical cases, including faxing the form back to the scheduling office.
Maintains confidentiality of cases, patient information and procedures.
Obtains and inputs demographic information about the patient at the time of scheduling, including birth date, home phone number, work phone number if applicable, social security number, insurance.
Knows the current record of physicians, residents, medical students, and allied health personnel who have privileges in the Surgery department.
After the final OR schedule is printed or on an emergency basis prn, coordinates the notification of PSICOR for requesting equipment technicians as needed.
Obtains information regarding "special needs" of the patient and notifies the appropriate departments as necessary in order for the staff to be prepared when the patient arrives.
Coordinates and schedules needle localization and sentinel note biopsy procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned.
 
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with the clerical support duties at the Control Desk as needed by answering phones, taking messages, noting the physician's arrival in order to notify the crew of the start time.
Responds to call-in during a disaster.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION/TRAINING 
High School Diploma
             
 
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS (with minimum requirements indicated as appropriate)
Knowledge of office practices and computer operations, including typing and organizational skills.    
Knowledge of surgical procedures vocabulary and medical terminology
Knowledge of medical center operations, e.g., interdepartmental communications,   policies and procedures.
Two years experience in operating room, admissions or comparable position in a    patient care department preferred.
Background in surgical terminology and special instruments preferred.
